Breakfast in New York City with “Dapper” Dave:

So the first thing I do after sleeping on makeup FX artist Tom Lauten’s floor in his rented room in Larchmont, Long Island, is head into the Big Bad Apple to meet with Everitt, who has offered to take me to breakfast.

Poor Corey Haim. As you’re no doubt well aware, the former ’80s star, known for his roles in THE LOST BOYS, SILVER BULLET and LICENSE TO DRIVE, passed away a few months ago. Haim had a very public struggle with drugs and alcohol, followed by strings of rehab sleepovers and broken hearts. Though LOST BOYS and BULLET will always remain classics in my book, Haim did a creature feature in 1988 that will always hold a special place, somewhere on my shelf.

Plotdigger Films, the Canadian outfit behind LIVE FEED, GUTTERBALLS, HANGER and the upcoming STAR VEHICLE (which we previously covered here), is planning still more mayhem to outrage audiences. Its latest project is called THE MURDER MACK, and co-star/first-time producer Dan Ellis got in touch to tell us about it.

“There’s a lot of extreme stuff this year,” promises TRUE BLOOD series creator/executive producer Alan Ball. “There are a lot of prosthetic parts.” He pauses for effect. “Let me just say, yes, there will be blood.”

There are some things in this life that seem to have always been here, which carry such a level of perfection that we as mere mortals cannot possibly fathom that they were created by human hands. For genre fans, one of these wonders exists in the form of a little movie called PREDATOR.

The land of 12-inch horror figures was once ruled by Sideshow Collectibles. Back in the day, they put out some amazing Universal monster, Freddy, Jason, Leatherface and TWILIGHT ZONE figures. They’d still be king to this day if they hadn’t started concentrating more on non-horror licenses. Well, lucky for us, a 1/6-scale savior has risen in its place: Amok Time.

The eight films hitting DVD and VOD in the coming months—with one also receiving theatrical play—under the FANGORIA FrightFest banner (see www.fangoriafrightfest.com for details) represent a cross-section of horror subgenres and countries of origin. And for one of them—Jaume Balagueró’s FRAGILE—the series represents a long-awaited resurrection. Produced more than five years ago and released across the world in the mid/late 2000s, the movie fell into U.S. limbo due to the financial troubles of the two distributors (MGM and Bauer Martinez Studios) that wound up with the Stateside rights.

On my way to catch a train from DC to New York at 3 in the morning, I had an unwelcome setback as Johnny Law guided me, the lone car on the bypass, off to the shoulder with his traditional blue-and-reds dancing in my rearview. Upon arrival in the Big Apple, I snagged breakfast at an enticing diner that served freshly brewed Columbian engine oil, two cups of which I desperately chugged to gain some sense of alertness. However shock-inducing or cringeworthy, neither of those events would provide a wake-up call like the bloodsoaked, bone-crunching, brutally violent game play of Namco Bandai’s reboot of the treasured SPLATTERHOUSE franchise, slated for third-quarter 2010 release on the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 platforms.

Recently, we reported on a host of William Lustig-related news, including the upcoming new double DVD and Blu-ray debut of MANIAC, his second annual “William Lustig Presents” series at NYC’s Anthology Film Archives and the aforementioned cult slasher’s special screening at the Brooklyn Academy of Music (see that item here ). Lustig is clearly having a busy summer—and he also has a MANIAC remake to talk about.
