Through a feature film and an on-line series that was picked up for DVD distribution by Troma last year, CHAINSAW SALLY mastermind JimmyO Burril and his muse, star and mascot April Monique Burril have made waves by making many messes on screen, using social networking, endless outreach and, most importantly, an emphasis on fandom and family. It has worked enough that season two of THE CHAINSAW SALLY SHOW is revving up (listen…hear the sound of that chain belt grinding metal and smell the gasoline vapors?) starting today, to give devotees more of the seriocomic sex and bloodletting they adore.

This round, however, the Burrils have added more layers to their monster, dialing down some of the giggles in favor of a darker storyline, one that echoes DEXTER in some ways. April once more dons the grubby cutoffs and little-girl-gone-wild hairdo to play her signature role, going up against another female serial killer who is trying to steal Sally’s lethal thunder and take credit for her carnage. Debbie Rochon comes back for more sizzle and some lovely, um, snuggle scenes that charge up the target audience’s hormone quotient, and JimmyO’s Joel M. Reed-ish sense of Grand Guignol/vaudeville lunacy returns with a vengeance. It’s amply disgusting, cruel and vulgar, and yet charmingly so.

Whether you thrill to this sort of arch, camp stew is a matter of taste. But watching the first episode of the new batch of bloody episodes, I marvel at it, even more now than I did last season when we featured them in FANGORIA’s pages. In many ways, the unapologetically cheap THE CHAINSAW SALLY SHOW is one of the most exciting and interesting DIY small-screen entertainments out there. It has a mythology, a strong identity and honesty, a rebellious, punk-rock “f**k you” spirit that gives its audience exactly what it wants and at the same time is ambitious enough to defy expectations. And really, at the heart of it all, THE CHAINSAW SALLY SHOW is a love story—a tale of a man and the woman he loves working hard, out of pocket, round the clock, dedicated to giving their all for a bloody good show, regardless of feast or famine. They are literally doing this for love; it’s commendable and more than a bit moving.
