Fans of Teutonic trash master Uwe Boll–and yes, we know
you’re out there–cite his 2005 video game adaptation BLOODRAYNE as one of his
best efforts, filled as it is with sex, blood and sheer zippy weirdness. The
movie, starring TERMINATOR 3’s Kristanna Lokken as the “Dhampir” Rayne, spawned
a direct-to-vid sequel, BLOODRAYNE: DELIVERANCE (also helmed by Boll), set in
the wild west in which Lokken was replaced by actress and model Natassia
Malthe. Now comes the next epic, BLOODRAYNE: THE THIRD REICH, also with Malthe,
this time set in World War 2 and filled with all manner of bloodsucking Nazi
nuttiness. BLOODRAYNE: THE THIRD REICH is available now on DVD/Blu-ray
from Phase 4 and in honor of this, Fango called the admittedly smoking hot
actress to talk about her relationship with Dr. Boll (yes it’s true, he is) and
the various freaks and geeks that populate his world.
FANGORIA: You’ve been in three of his films so far, but how did you meet Uwe Boll?
NATASSIA MALTHE: I met Uwe at a boxing thing he was doing in Vancouver…
FANG: Oh man…
MALTHE: What?
FANG: I was one of the critics he fought, the only Canadian.
MALTHE: That was you? Wow! [Laughs]
FANG: Yes. Hilarious that your relationship with your director took flight at the same time I took one of his haymakers to the side of my head…
MALTHE: That is funny. But yeah, I’m good friends with Kristanna Lokken and she invited me to this thing back in 2006. I went and that was the first time I met Uwe. He’d seen my work in ELEKTRA with Jennifer Garner and he pretty much asked me on the spot if I wanted to be Rayne and I said yes.

FANG: And how is that relationship? Are you his muse now?
MALTHE: Our relationship has its ups and downs, for sure. But I think I know how to get around his personality. He’s very firm on set and there have been times where he was angry with me, and me with him, but I think after our arguments, at the end of the day, we manage to create good work.
FANG: Uwe gets a bad rap for his film and his attitude, but I always found him charming; even after our fight. Do you think he’s misunderstood?
MALTHE: Totally misunderstood. Uwe is a very nice man and a very, very smart man. People are jealous of him because he’s outside the Hollywood system and because he’s successful, but they just don’t understand him.
FANG: So this is the second time you got to play Rayne, is there anything new you’re bringing to this round?
MALTHE: Well, yeah, I changed my hair! Rayne is supposed to have red hair but because this is a much greyer film, I wanted her to blend in more so I dyed it black with just some red highlights. I wanted her to be a bit more kind of goth. And her attitude is a bit different because this is a much different movie. The second one was a western, so I watched lots of Clint Eastwood movies to give Rayne a certain feeling but here, because of the harsher setting she’s a lot more direct and vicious….
FANG: You’re young, but you have lots of credits accumulated already…do you have any regrets in your career path thus far?
MALTHE: Yes I do. I wish…I wish I hadn’t done so much of the, well, sexy stuff. You know, before I was a MAXIM model, before I became known for my body I used to get a lot more interesting and dynamic parts. I used to play crackheads and different kind of people and I wish people would take more chances on me to do stuff like that…
Until Malthe gets called to replace Meryl Streep however, you can catch her kicking – and biting and ripping apart – Nazi ass in BLOODRAYNE: THE THIRD REICH. It’s yet another slice of colorful B movie bliss from one of the most equally colorful genre filmmakers alive. Next stop….BLUBBERELLA!
