One of the most controversial films shown at New York’s Tribeca Film Festival earlier this year was TICKED-OFF TRANNIES WITH KNIVES, a horror-revenge film that ticked off certain members of the transgendered community itself. Now it’s poised to provoke some more, as it has a North American distributor.

Breaking Glass Pictures gave Fango the scoop that it has acquired the rights to the movie, and plans theatrical screenings during the Halloween season, followed by DVD/video-on-demand release in November. The only question: which of the movie’s banners, including Vicious Circle Films (which has recently unleased the likes of Chad Ferrin’s SOMEONE’S KNOCKING AT THE DOOR and EASTER BUNNY, KILL! KILL! and Ryan Nicholson’s HANGER) it’ll go out under. “We’re still debating whether it should be on our Breaking Glass Pictures, Vicious Circle Films or Queer Culture Cinema label,” says company president Richard Ross. “Whatever we decide, this film truly has a wide appeal for an adventurous audience.” Whatever the case, CEO Richard Wolff adds, “It’s hard to imagine a film that more perfectly suits our company than TICKED-OFF TRANNIES WITH KNIVES,” says Wolff. “Since it has a mixture of horror and LGBT themes, plus mainstream comedic appeal, it plays to the demographics of all of our film labels.”

Written and directed by Israel Luna, TICKED-OFF TRANNIES is about a group of transgendered performers who unite for vengeance when a few of their group are viciously bashed and left for dead by a gang of creeps. Despite protests by GLAAD at the Tribeca Fest, the movie played there to enthusiastic audiences and has since won awards and showcases at other fests. “I’m not sure if the controversy and protests have swayed people to approach the movie in a certain way, but the reactions have been amazing!” Luna says. “We’ve gotten people yelling at the screen, booing the villain and cheering for the girls, saying things like ‘Kick their ass!’ I never expected this to be such a reaction-type of film, but I’m so happy that that’s what the fans have made it!” Look for more coverage at this site as TICKED-OFF TRANNIES gets closer to release, and see the movie’s trailer below and its official website here.

Do you really thinkanyone is going to take this film seriously? The first poster commented that it's just over the top fun. Many types of people have been the subject of such movies like The Evil Dead and the Re-Anamator. If your objective is truly to make t-girls like everyone else than you can't give them special status which in itself is a form of segrigation. And who says t-girls can't kill? I just read about one who is on death row and is schedualed for execution next year. She killed about 5 people. It's the politically correct folks like you who would like to deny reality for others in trade for a Utopian world. It's dangerous.

0 #2 Defamatory Stereotypes Inflict Terrible HarmKelley Winters 2010-08-11 22:22
As the founder of GID Reform Advocates, I have worked for many years to refute defamatory stereotypes of mental illness that are inflicted upon trans and gender variant people. Trans women and men lose their jobs, homes, families, children, civil liberties, human dignity and physical safety as a consequence of these false stereotypes. Mr. Luna's depiction of transgender and transsexual women as mad, vengeful killers wielding blood drenched knives sends the most harmful message possible to employers, colleagues, neighbors, families and children of people who are denied fundamental civil rights in most states. Good people and loving families will suffer because of the way they are caricatured in this film, its title and its promotion materials.

-2 #1 trailer?Hunter 2010-07-30 12:16
I saw this film in SF last week and the trailer is NOTHING like the film. ITS WAY BETTER. The trailer makes it seem like a drama but it's actually Super hilarious-gore-explotation hybrid which inspired Rocky Horror Show-like audience reactions. yelling at the screen and general rowdiness. Was the best time I had at the movies in years
