I ventured out to the newly renovated Bloor Hot Docs Cinema* the other night to take in some of the best in genre film with a legion of other people who love these movies as I do. With a lineup of Cuban zombie opus JUAN OF THE DEAD and haunted house chiller THE PACT, we were in for a night indeed.

Ask nearly any Xbox 360 owner about Kinect, and most would agree the hardware is a serious piece of technology that doesn't quite have enough high quality releases outside of casual experiences such as DANCE CENTRAL. Which is the primary reason why the announcement of From Software and Capcom's sequel STEEL BATTALION: HEAVY ARMOR was met with such a high level of anticipation and optimism. The title of Astron-6’s making-of FATHER’S DAY doc is inspired by a death-march like motto, NO SLEEP, NO SURRENDER, and the teaser shows us some of the hilarious and insane conditions the cast and crew had to endure while making a $10, 000 feature look like a million dollars. This will prove to be something to watch for all indie filmmakers out there. You can expect to see the blood, sweat and tears that were poured into the movie, but perhaps the most interesting aspect of this documentary is that it is being released by the film collective independently, and will not be appearing on the FATHER’S DAY set from Troma.

When I started this blog I initially pitched it to our Commander in Chief, Chris Alexander, as a one off piece for the print magazine. I wanted to tell the story of a new wave of indie filmmakers who were out there on the fringes, making incredible films in innovative new ways. I quickly realized this couldn’t be some one-off piece as there was a real scene and movement out there that I felt needed to be documented so Chris kindly agreed on this blog.

When Suda 51 and Warner Bros. Interactive announced LOLLIPOP CHAINSAW last year, heads were turned, people were offended, but most importantly, gamers were given a glimpse at an interesting new take on what both zombie and action titles could encompass. LOLLIPOP CHAINSAW looked promising, and a game this unique obviously has unlimited potential. Luckily, LOLLIPOP CHAINSAW more than lives up all of the pre-launch hype, and will give players one hell of a wild ride.
