BLOODY BLOGS

I’m a child of the 1980s. I grew up on a steady diet of Count Chocula cereal, bad hair metal and VHS tapes, most of which were procured from a mom-and-pop video store in my hometown of Winchester, Virginia. It was among these dusty shelves that I (to quote The Damned) caught “the tide at the flood” and “fell in love with the video nasty.”

Bloody Blogs - PAPER CUTS

Welcome to hell. It’s as good a place as any to start talking horror and spirituality. I’m sure our ongoing conversation will take us to other places as well, but hell…hell is a place that burns up BS. That seems like a good starting point to me.

I was fortunate enough to screen a copy of New York filmmaker/FANGORIA scribe Jeremiah Kipp’s most recent short film, CONTACT. Several months ago, FANGORIA had its Trinity of Terrors convention out in Las Vegas, and it was just friggin’ perfect. Everything from the black-and-gold color scheme, to the stocked bar outside the main room, to the endless list of celebrities, to the slot machines located just one elevator away—we got it down. It was a Class A production.

I first became aware of Joshua Grannell and his alter ego, Peaches Christ, on a trip to San Francisco in 2000? 2001? I was dating a guy who had moved down from SF to Los Angeles, and on one of our many trips up north, we took in a screening of SHOWGIRLS at the Midnight Mass summer film series. Peaches was the host of the evening, and the show opened with a re-enactment of both the “Goddess” number and the “Nomi F**ks Zack in the pool” scene with drag queens (and one drag king playing “Zack”). I was hooked.
