BLOODY BLOGS

A creepy little book slithered into my mailbox recently. The tome shares a title with the classic Doris Wishman quasi-documentary, LET ME DIE A WOMAN, and yes, like the film, the book's plot does involve a transgender character. But whereas Wishman's film examines the transgender experience through documentary footage and straightforward fictional vignettes, author Alan Kelly's gruesome meditation mixes sci-fi and horror with a dash of noir revenge drama into a squirming, half-dead stew.

We've added one more review!

Since they shaved a day off of the schedule at November’s American Film Market, my last movie day in Santa Monica is jam-packed. When all is said and done, I’ll have seen 25 new independent and foreign films in six consecutive days. Quite a haul, huh? You can read part one of my movie orgy here and the second chapter here.

The vampire has become so high-fashion that I’ve ended up making the comparison between the bloodsucker and the queen of the prom, or the lead singer in a rock ’n’ roll band. And just when I thought the undead were lagging behind, TV’s THE WALKING DEAD hit the pop-culture scene. However, there are other horror themes that never go away because they work, and one is the timeless psycho on the loose. INSATIABLE writer/director Scott W. Perry has just released his new short SOMETHING JUST, in which he puts his own spin on the serial-killer genre.

It’s an unseasonably warm November day in Santa Monica, CA, with the temperature shooting past 90 degrees. You won’t find me at the beach, though. I’m ensconced at the American Film Market, watching movies from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. at the industry trade event. See part one of my six-day movie marathon here and stop back Monday for the final chapter.

I’ve been on the American Film Market beat since 1998, and at this year’s industry marketplace, held November 3-9 in Santa Monica, CA, I watched more movies in six days than the average person sees in a year. Then again, said moviegoers usually don’t have the opportunity to catch films such as THE DEVIL’S FLOWER (Russia’s TWILIGHT knockoff) or THE TERROR EXPERIMENT (C. Thomas Howell vs. zombies in a high-rise) at their local multiplex.

In Part One of my interview with BITE MARKS writer/director Mark Bessenger, we talked about our earliest mental scars caused by horror cinema. In this second part, Bessenger gives me the lowdown on shooting a vampire (with a side of gay indie) comedy in the middle of Indiana.

BITE MARKS, the new darkly comedic vampire film from writer/director Mark Bessenger, combines two fantasy scenarios - vampirism, and the hot trucker who seems straight but just might be a little gay around the edges. But don't worry, straight guys, there is a nice set of vampiric boobs on display for quite a bit of the film as well.
