BLOODY BLOGS

I consider myself to be pretty horror-hardened. I can watch impalements, eye-gougings and eviscerations without batting an eyelash. I feel I have been adequately trained in the event of zombie uprisings, and I have learned the various tricks to take down werewolves, oversized killer sharks and endless Freddy Kruegers and Jasons. I’ve got 20 years of extreme horror viewing behind me. And yet, if I’m getting into my morning shower, for example, and a single centipede suddenly darts from the drain up the wall at lightning speed, I will scream like Marion Crane from PSYCHO.

We’re halfway through the second term at Miskatonic, and I have to say it’s been great to see how the crossover between different courses is giving the students a noticeable, rounded grasp on the last century of horror history, as well as exploring concepts such as the monstrous-feminine, post-feminism, uses of internal and external space, eyewitness reliability and subjective truth—all in completely varied contexts, from the haunted-house film to the giallo.

To start a conversation on the last 10 years of horror and also get back into the swing of blogging, I’ve rounded up what I consider to be the top ten horror films of the past decade (check out the first half here). The following are my personal top five—what I consider to be the absolute must-see flicks of the past decade. So read on fellow horror fanatics, and tell me what picks you agree with, and what you want to tear my head off for not including.

My, the past 10 years have flown by. Circa 2000 I was just entering middle school, and now I’m about to graduate college (!) and head out into the real world. Things certainly changed in the horror genre as well, and this past decade produced a lot of defining gems as well as mountains of trash. Seeing as how I haven’t been tending to my blog recently, I decided to put together my own personal list of the best horror movies of the decade to get back in the swing of things. Note: This is purely my own opinion, and does not represent that of the entire Fango staff. I’m making this list merely to start a conversation on what people think the best horror flicks of the 2000s were.

Ari Gold’s music video for “Make My Body Rock” features bisexuality, vampirism and eating children. What’s not to love? Tony spoke to Gold about his new video here, and I continue the conversation about not only that, but girls with special powers…

When my personal remembrances of Sir Christopher Lee left off in the last edition of Elegies (see here and here for previous installments), the actor had just survived the clutches of three obsessed fans who hounded him at his one and only FANGORIA convention appearance (see backstage footage of the event at the bottom of this blog). I thought I’d been lucky to meet the genre legend once, but as fate would have it, I would have two more memorable opportunities to hobnob with Lee in the years that followed…

To wrap up Women in Horror Month, I’ve found the most elusive of creatures—the horror lesbian! Just take a tour through photographer April A. Taylor’s website, and you’ll find blood and women in peril to satisfy even the most voracious of gore-lovin’ eyeballs. Much like me, Taylor (pictured) is a complete horror geek, so this interview is more of a conversation than your traditional Q&A. Warning: Readers may be exposed to high levels of nerd.
