Whether or not you think remaking George A. Romero’s THE CRAZIES was a good idea, Anchor Bay’s DVD and Blu-ray of the result demonstrates that there was a lotta love for Romero among its creators. An audio commentary by director Breck Eisner and a dedicated featurette make it clear that the filmmaking team aimed to be respectful of the original even as they took a somewhat different point of view on the material.

The back of BLOOD ON THE HIGHWAY’s DVD case attributes these words to FANGORIA: “A Texas vampire opus.” Seeing as how Fango has never previously reviewed the movie (now out from E1 Entertainment), one must assume the description came from some sort of announcement or news item about it. The lesson: when filmmakers or distributors are snatching quotes that do nothing to denote the quality or entertainment value of their “opus,” it’s often a bad sign—or, in this case, a terrible, terrible one.

You might expect an Asian flick about a rampaging, man-eating giant wild boar to be a simple, down-and-dirty creature feature, but CHAW (playing this week at the New York Asian Film Festival) is more ambitious than that. While it delivers the goods in terms of monster action, it also tries to deliver a lot more, with varying levels of success.

Last year, Blood Energy Potion, a little plastic bag of red liquid covered in claims that it “contain[ed] similar nutritional value to blood,” was marketed as a horror-themed alternative to the overcaffeinated calorie bombs being sold as energy drinks. I found myself enjoying the stuff, especially when heated and served in a skull-shaped chalice, so I was perfectly happy when a new novelty IV bag, Zombie Blood Energy Potion, was sent along to review.

The second installment of DC/Vertigo’s I, ZOMBIE brings us back into the world of zombie/detective Gwen Dylan and her motley crew of friends and foes. The first issue spent most of its pages more or less introducing us to the characters, and the last few setting the gears in motion. Before reading the second issue, I was ready for a predictable plot explosion wherein everything took off at breakneck speed; the stage had been set and all the players appeared to be at the starting position. But to my surprise (and relief), this series is turning out to be a slowly crafted, well-planned, outlandish romp!

Ever remember having night terrors as a child? Those somnambulistic panic attacks that sent you bolting upright, eyes wide open, screaming in your sleep? Pediatricians estimate that about 30 percent of all boys and girls experience pavor nocturnus at some point in their childhood—which, truth be told, is just about the same percentage of stories in Blood Bound Books’ new anthology NIGHT TERRORS that kept this reviewer up last night.

It must be difficult to launch an original genre TV show these days, after LOST and the reboots of BATTLESTAR GALATICA and DOCTOR WHO set the bars for production quality and rabid popularity so high. The circumstances by which SANCTUARY evolved from webisodes to Syfy series has threatened to overshadow the actual show, and fans of comparatively fascinating programs like CARNIVÀLE and DOLLHOUSE might catch a SANCTUARY episode and wonder why it’s the one still running.

The land of 12-inch horror figures was once ruled by Sideshow Collectibles. Back in the day, they put out some amazing Universal monster, Freddy, Jason, Leatherface and TWILIGHT ZONE figures. They’d still be king to this day if they hadn’t started concentrating more on non-horror licenses. Well, lucky for us, a 1/6-scale savior has risen in its place: Amok Time.
