Somewhat softer of a punch to the gut than the notorious A SERBIAN FILM, with which it shares the Subversive Serbia showcase at the current Fantasia film festival in Montreal, THE LIFE AND DEATH OF A PORNO GANG is no less explicit, though its sexual content may be even more extreme than its gore. Before the bloodshed even kicks in, there are graphic scenes of rape and bestiality, which will no doubt clear the room of more sensitive viewers before the knives and chainsaws come out.

Is it fair to judge a film’s merits based on its creation? When watching APOCALYPSE NOW, it’s hard not to consider the hell that Francis Ford Coppola and Martin Sheen went through while making it. Going into PARASOMNIA (DREAMS OF THE SLEEPWALKER), out this week on DVD and Blu-ray from E1, I knew that director William Malone—one of the original MASTERS OF HORROR—had self-financed this project. What was to be seen would be undoubtedly a labor of love. Some journalists have no trouble coping with that kind of information. Some.

Expect nothing less than raunchy humor and unrelenting gore from THE LOVING DEAD: THE ULTIMATE ZOMBIE LOVE STORY by Amelia Beamer (pictured), out this week from Night Shade Books. Are you a magician, inspired by the works of H.P. Lovecraft? Would you rather be summoned for jury duty to Azathoth’s Court over the People’s Court? Do your nightly prayers consist of “Ph‘nglui mglw‘nafh Cthulhu R‘lyeh wgah‘nagl fhtagn”? If you answered “Yes” to any or all of these questions, nonfiction occult writer Donald Tyson’s (pictured) newest addition to his extensive Lovecraftian repertoire, THE 13 GATES OF THE NECRONOMICON: A WORKBOOK OF MAGIC (just out from Llewllyn Publications) will make a great addition to your library.

If you see only one movie this summer in which extraterrestrial hunters duke it out with well-armed humans…well, to see the better one, you could have attended ALIEN VS. NINJA’s world premiere last weekend at the New York Asian Film Festival, or if you’re in the Montreal or London areas, catch it this Sunday, July 11 at the Fantasia film festival or Friday, August 27 at Film4 FrightFest respectively. Or keep an eye out for further fest dates, because this one’s a rollicking, bloody good time that benefits from an enthusiastic audience.
