Ronald Bassett’s 1966 novel WITCHFINDER GENERAL tells the partially fictionalized story of Matthew Hopkins, a notoriously vicious 17th-century witchhunter. Two years later, the book served as the basis for Michael Reeves’ oft-censored and controversial film of the same name (released in the U.S. as THE CONQUEROR WORM), starring Vincent Price in the title role. Now, 42 years later, Bluewater Publications has tossed its hat into the ring with a comics sequel as part of its VINCENT PRICE PRESENTS series.

Midway through SEA OF DUST (now on DVD from Cinema Epoch), two characters make the horrifying discovery that a wounded woman under their care has been hollowed out by the malevolent force they’re fighting. Her empty body is walking around under his influence, empty of bones, organs and, possibly, soul. If you take this idea and reverse it, you will have the perfect metaphor for Scott Bunt’s directorial debut: a movie stuffed full of ideas, but wrapped in a shell almost too flimsy to contain it.
I guess I should hold myself, in some small way, partially responsible for this. Back in 2006, the actually-funny trailer for DATE MOVIE tricked me into seeing the film, little knowing that said preview consisted of the flick’s opening minutes, and that the laughs would cease immediately thereafter. But by the time its first weekend was over, $19 million worth of suckers had seen DATE MOVIE, thus paving the way for writer/directors Jason Friedberg and Aaron Seltzer to follow up with EPIC MOVIE, DISASTER MOVIE, MEET THE SPARTANS (since HOMOEROTIC PERIOD ACTION MOVIE apparently didn’t have the right ring to it) and now the equally, appallingly awful VAMPIRES SUCK.
