Hitman horror, who knew? Following this year's astounding KILL LIST (which DEVIL'S BUSINESS will no doubt be compared to) UK filmmaker Sean Hogan has planted his own stamp on a subgenre we didn't necessarily know we wanted. The truth is, the two films are fantastic companions and you shouldn't waste time seeing either at your earliest convenience.

You might find difficulty being eloquent when it comes to navigating and expressing thoughts on YOU'RE NEXT. If so, it’s because the literal buzzing you're left with, upon its end, gives you essentially one word: great. YOU'RE NEXT is great.

LIVID is a stunner of a second film. Following INSIDE—what’s probably the most striking contemporary horror debut—Alexandre Bustillo and Julien Maury have begun to carve their niche, proving their adeptness at switching tone and subgenre while crafting recognizable and intriguing style and thematic obsessions all their own.  Thankfully, that style elevates an admittedly thin story and lack of cohesion into a surreal, lyrical and moving nightmare.

The despair and frightening solitude that horror often strives for has a real life parallel; life in the armed forces. It seems obvious, but it’s rarely used to its full potential. Thankfully, THE SQUAD (world premiering at Fantastic Fest), the debut from Colombian filmmaker Jaime Osorio Marquez is an incredibly worthy and unsettling addition to the military horror section of our beloved genre.

South Korea has been one of the strongest contenders in the world when it comes to contemporary genre, exporting electric films we find it hard to shake post-viewing. Unfortunately, this fact may just be what brings the perfectly fun BLIND down.

Sadly, we live in the sort of times that encourage an influx of gloomy postapocalypse movies. Incessant global conflict tied in with mounting economic and environmental horror stories has the world’s future troublingly uncertain. Director Doug Aarniokoski’s THE DAY, which premiered at this year’s Toronto International Film Festival, is the latest pessimistic prognostication that aims to have viewers rushing out to stock up on munitions and canned goods.
