It’s not just another title in a seemingly endless parade of gimmick 3D films. This is 3D done right.  From Director Kim Ji-hun comes the underwater 3D monster thriller SECTOR 7. Thousands of leagues beneath the sea, a giant vein of oil rests in the mysterious depths of location Sector 7.  Abandoned 30 years ago after a horrible unexplained accident, a young crew has returned to succeed where their predecessors have failed, trying to tap this legendary oil vein.  However, unbeknownst this foolhardy crew, there is a lot more down there then just oil. 

Part sea creature thriller, part campy Asian action flick, SECTOR 7 is classic Korean cinema, unapologetic and unafraid.  Ji-hun makes bold choices with the story while keeping the action consistently moving forward.  SECTOR 7 also features characters that are hilariously stereotypical, but without insulting the audience.

With all the 3D the kids are talking about these days (and 50 years ago), it’s easy to just disregard this one as another new-fangled gimmick (like they did 50 years ago). Those who normally cringe at that frightening 3D moniker will be pleasantly surprised at the intelligent use of such technology in SECTOR 7.  In many films, 3D effects might as well be two hours of a yo-yo flying at your face.  Not only does SECTOR 7 incorporate the in-your-face dynamic we all associate with 3D, it goes one step further and uses it to create a broader depth to the cinematic experience, an actual 3rd dimension if you will.

Part of this year’s Screamfest Los Angeles, SECTOR 7 has already made a huge splash in it’s native South Korea. In the states, SECTOR 7 could quite possibly develop the same surprise following at fellow South Korean monster flick THE HOST, which it most certainly shares a similar flavor.  Although still making the festival rounds, keep an eye and ear out for any kind of release. You won’t want to miss this one.
