Out on DVD today from Dark Sky Films, THE LAST LOVECRAFT: RELIC OF CTHULHU, directed by Henry Saine, is yet another filmic portrayal of the late H.P. Lovecraft’s Cthulhu mythos. Cthulhu has been chilling snug in his sweet R’lyeh pad for far too long, and thanks to his loyal cult of devoutly fishy followers, he is about to be called to the stage for an epic battle royale.

Based on “Dreamhouse,” one of the better segments of the 1983 anthology SCREAMTIME, Reg Traviss’ PSYCHOSIS (now on DVD from Entertainment One) is an unsuccessful reimagining about a successful novelist, Susan Golden (Charisma Carpenter), escaping to a large mansion in the British countryside with smug boyfriend David (Paul Sculfor) to finish off her latest work. Too bad the home may, or may not, have a bloody past.

HATCHET II hits DVD and Blu-ray from Dark Sky Films today—with a little more significance than most theatrically released movies, since AMC killed that run in some theaters three days after it began. Whether you view AMC’s decision as the rational reaction to an underperforming film or decry the ratings standards that led to a limited theatrical break, the disc releases are more than likely your first chance to see HATCHET II.

With Adam Green's HATCHET II hitting DVD and Blu-ray today (see review here), it’s high time we got around to belatedly covering Anchor Bay’s disc releases of FROZEN, his second fright feature as writer/director. Of his movies, this literal chiller is the best showcase of Green’s filmmaking chops, and the bonus features demonstrate his fortitude in tackling a project requiring far more than the usual physical commitment.

Hello, dear horror film fan… I want to play a game. You are guilty of the crime of complacent compliance. Time and time again, you have shelled out your hard-earned money at the cineplex for the waning SAW series, keeping it alive long enough to spawn yet another annual entry in the lengthy legacy of Jigsaw. It’s nearly been a decade since James Wan and Leigh Whannell’s SAW made a splash at Sundance, snatched up by Lionsgate for a quick million-dollar acquisition, so it’s nearly forgivable that you’d forget what made the original so fresh.

Before I get into my critique of the monotonous, silly and lamentably predictable THE TRAVELER (now out on DVD from Paramount Home Entertainment), I have to make a few comments about the film’s star, Val Kilmer. Or should I say SHALLOW VAL? I guess I haven’t seen the TOP GUN actor in a movie in a while, because the formerly fit and hale Kilmer is now a flabby and hefty fellow.

Alejandro Jodorowsky’s cult classic SANTA SANGRE, making its long-awaited U.S. double-DVD and Blu-ray debuts next Tuesday, January 25 from Severin Films, plays like a bizarre carnival parade staged by Tod Browning, filled with freaks, cults, and an elephant funeral. The oddities begin with the film’s first shot of Fenix (Axel Jodorowsky) perched on a tree in an insane asylum.
