One of the great things about being a reviewer for FANGORIA is when totally unknown stuff ends up in your lap. The good stuff ends up a permanent part of your collection, the not-so-good stuff ends up being gifted to friends on their birthdays. The great stuff ends up on its own shelf and becomes the anchor for future searches. John Dimes’ stuff ends up in the latter category.

Some of you on the East Coast might recognize Dimes from his stint as Dr. Sarcofiguy, a hip and hilarious monster movie host. His irreverent style is unique and his shows are highly entertaining. It wasn’t until later that I discovered he was just as funny as a writer and artist. When a copy of THE WHITE CORPSE HUSTLE from Mr. Dimes arrived in my mailbox, I set it aside for a few weeks while I reviewed some serious dreck. A few weeks later, on a rainy Saturday, I fished out the book and proceeded to laugh my ass off. Despite its occasional typos and grammatical errors, I found it to be a delightful read and much more fun than the bloated, overwritten INTERVIEW WITH THE VAMPIRE.

So it was with great anticipation that I received a copy of Dimes’ latest effort, GURLIMANN’S BIZARRE BAZAAR. I wasn’t disappointed. Dimes is the author and illustrator of this graphic effort, a series of disjointed stories featuring a gender-bending heroine that mixes humor with horror to create a strange and surreal world.

Dimes is a major talent—funny in person, word and image, as well as a musician—and it’s only a matter of time before one of the majors snaps this guy up. Better start your collection now; if your local comic store doesn’t have the book, order it here.
