When watching films such as BLADE RUNNER or DARK CITY, it becomes quite clear that, while there are some great suspense-noir flicks out there, and there are some great science-fiction features, a hybrid of the two genres (be it tech-noir, future noir or cyberpunk) is nigh unbeatable. HEAVY METAL, “the world’s foremost adult illustrated fantasy magazine” has always been well aware of this.
KING OF THE FLIES VOL. 1: HALLORAVE (Fantagraphics), written by Michel Prius and illustrated by Pascal (Mezzo) Mesenburg, is a dark tale that takes place in the subtitular town, where the suburban mundane is just a cover for the depravity, drug culture and sex that occurs daily. The story is told from the perspectives of many of the main characters, but the story mostly centers around Eric, who calls himself the King of the Flies (and wears a fly mask to make that point clear), and is not a wholesome citizen.
Writer/artist Steve Pugh is already master of his four-color domain. Said domain includes etching adventures of popular characters who have inhabited the Marvel, DC and Dark Horse universes; in the process, Pugh has become a celebrated hero of the comic-book/graphic-novel medium, one whose more-often-than-not dark imagination knows no bounds.
SAND & FURY: A SCREAM QUEEN ADVENTURE is an erotic thriller riddled with flashbacks and hallucinations. Author Ho Che Anderson has fabricated a stylish, minimalist narrative about sex, blood and death.
After reading some of the loudmouth insane rants of vocalist Mike Abominator, I knew I had to hear Gravehill. This band will leave you in need of a straitjacket, since it’s impossible to listen to them without going absolutely insane!
Radical Comics’ FVZA: FEDERAL VAMPIRE ZOMBIE AGENCY (based on a parody website created by Richard S. Dargan) is a recounting of the zombie and vampire attacks that have plagued humanity since 1868, and the federal agency force that served to diminish their numbers. Since the vampire and zombie populations have eventually been cured over the ensuing years, the FVZA has been disbanded since the 1970s.

Well, it seems as if metalcore has made its way to the UK, and as far as some are concerned (or at the very least, this particular writer), they can keep it. But let’s not get ahead of ourselves.
Vampires are everywhere these days, which comes as no surprise. Whether in television or movies, novels or comic books, it seems like the audience’s desire for bloodsuckers (and their hunters) is becoming far more insatiable than the monsters’ own thirst for blood. But as is the case with any popular horror icon, vampires have—ahem—lost their bite, straying so far from their Gothic horror roots one could scarcely even believe they are the same monster.
