Universal’s MAMA has become one of the first hits of 2013,
scoring the biggest box office for a supernatural film in a couple of years—so
naturally, the sequel talk is starting.
Screen Daily reports that MAMA is notable not only for its own success (nearly $70 million in the U.S. so far, and just starting a profitable international run), but as a model for an English-language co-production made by Universal Pictures International Productions. Briefly considered as a Spanish-language feature, it was ultimately shot as a Canadian/Spanish project, and Universal Pictures president of international David Kosse tells the trade, “MAMA is the first of this type of model that we’ve had enormous success with, so there are more opportunities for this kind of film. We think there’s potential for a MAMA franchise. We’d like to do another one. But those conversations are in the early stages.” It remains to be seen whether original director/co-writer Andres Muschietti, producer/co-writer Barbara Muschietti, executive producer Guillermo del Toro or star Jessica Chastain would be involved with a MAMA follow-up.
