The full schedule for the 11th New York Asian Film Festival
was announced the other day, and as usual the offerings include an eclectic and
enticing mix of horrific fare. Read on for details and trailers.
The fest runs Friday, June 29-Sunday, July 15 at Lincoln Center’s Walter Reade Theatre (165 West 65th Street) and Japan Society (333 East 47th Street), and includes a number of North American premieres and special guests (among them Korean actor Choi Min-sik of OLDBOY and I SAW THE DEVIL). The fright films in the lineup include:
• TORMENTED (a.k.a. RABBIT HORROR, pictured above), the latest from JU-ON/THE GRUDGE creator Takashi Shimizu, a frightful fairy tale about a villainous bunny, shot by acclaimed cinematographer Christopher Doyle—Sunday, July 15 at 4:15 p.m. at Japan Society
• ASURA, Kei-ichi Sato’s anime feature based on George Wakiyama’s banned manga about a cannibalistic, demonic child in feudal Japan—Thursday, July 12 at 6:30 p.m. at Japan Society
• DEAD BITE, a crazy, bloody zombie movie by the Thai director known as Joey Boy—Friday, July 6 at 11:10 p.m. and Wednesday, July 11 at 3:50 p.m. at Walter Reade
• DOOMSDAY BOOK, a hard science-fiction anthology from directors Kim Ji-woon (I SAW THE DEVIL, A TALE OF TWO SISTERS) and HANSEL & GRETEL’s Yim Pil-sung—Wednesday, July 11 at 8:15 p.m. and Thursday, July 12 at 1 p.m. at Walter Reade
• GYO, Takayuki Hirao’s anime film based on an amazing manga by TOMIE and UZUMAKI’s Junji Ito, in which sharks and other fish grow legs, come ashore and terrorize Japan—Saturday, July 14 at 5:30 p.m. at Japan Society
• MONSTERS CLUB, a retelling of the story of Unabomber Ted Kaczynski, only with added transsexual monsters and ghosts (that’s what it says here), from director Toshiaki Toyoda (who will be in attendance)—Sunday, July 15 at 6 p.m. at Japan Society
There will also be special midnight screenings at the Walter Reade of Chih-Hung Kuei’s insane supernatural martial-arts adventure BOXER’S OMEN (Friday, June 29) and Hajime Sato’s surrealistic vampire opus GOKE: BODYSNATCHER FROM HELL (Saturday, June 30). More details and tickets will be available soon at the official websites of the Film Society of Lincoln Center and Japan Society, the festival’s Facebook page and at Subwaycinemanews.com.
