The force behind PUSHER, BRONSON and DRIVE is teaming with New York legends William Lustig and Larry Cohen for the return of MANIAC COP.
Daily Grindhouse recently sat down with Cohen (IT'S ALIVE, GOLD TOLD ME TO), who revealed that the planned MANIAC COP prequel/remake has attracted the attention of Refn, who will produce the film alongside original director Lustig (MANIAC, VIGILANTE).
Cohen explains, “It’s going to be more a prequel than anything else, I am really excited to come back to this world especially since Nick is going to be a part of it. Nick [Winding Refn] has been talking to us about it for a while now and I had an idea that would work so we’re going to do it.” Cohen added the production isn't totally a go, but regardless, the prospect is incredibly exciting.
Refn, in addition to being an exhilarating filmmaker, is clearly steeped in genre love and knowledge. In DRIVE, a clip from VIGILANTE is given seconds of time, and later a music cue is taken from Gualtiero Jacopetti and Franco Prosperi's FAREWELL, UNCLE TOM. No word on who's directing just yet, and as wonderful as it would be if Refn took the reins, it'd be really cool to see Lustig return to the chair.
