Steve Niles' great horror/noir is getting close to the adaptation we're dying for.
Shock Til You Drop is reporting that in discussing his new series REMAINS, the creator of 30 DAYS OF NIGHT gave a brief update on the long-gestating big screen version of CRIMINAL MACABRE. The comic series and short stories tell of hard-boiled badass Cal McDonald, who solves crimes in a haze of illicit behavior and the supernatural.
"Cal is being developed at Universal for a feature movie. They really get it and are letting us do the film as an R," he said.
Apparently other places wanted to develop the property as a PG-13, which had Niles add, "I was like, have you read the comic? There’s not a lot of PG-13 stuff with Cal. Something will happen soon. Good news should come in the next six months."
CRIMINAL MACABRE was my first introduction Niles' material and it remains a really great, pulpy blend of horror and crime, and since Tom Jane is the model for Cal McDonald, the series practically begs for a Jane-starring film. Hopefully, good news does come our way!
