THE DARK TOWER is still standing, for now, says producer Brian Grazer.
Speaking to Grazer, The Playlist reports that THE DARK TOWER is still being developed by the producer, director Ron Howard and writer Akiva Goldsman. Universal previously backed out of the ambitious project which saw Stephen King's tale of the last gunslinger in Mid-World, and his pursuit of the Man in Black and the titular structure be expanded into three films and two television seasons. The budget on the first film hath scared them off, but Grazer now talks of a better script, with a budget seriously reduced; like $45 million reduced.
"We found a way to cut out $45 million out of the budget without changing the scope and actually giving it a good ending," Grazer said. “In the $140 million draft, the ending wasn’t quite as satisfying. Now, we’ve got $45 million, $50 million out of the way and a really satisfying ending. It’s gonna get made."
Plenty of expressed concern over Howard, and the fear of a watered-down epic, however the prospect of Javier Bardem essaying Roland Deschain is still an incredible one. We'll see what happens.
