While dedicated fans will bemoan the absence of original series star Robert Englund in the remake of A NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET (What? Not even a friggin’ cameo?!), the Fango Hall of Famer has not been sitting idle. Englund has a number of projects on the way, most lensed in his favorite European travel spots. Today, we’ll tell you about his Italian slasher film NIGHT OF THE SINNER.

“NIGHT OF THE SINNER is a psychological thriller set in an old family villa in Italy,” Englund tells us. “It’s a hybrid concoction of Hitchcock’s REBECCA and the Vincent Price HOUSE OF WAX, spiced with a dash of Dario Argento and Mario Bava for good measure. It has a sadistic prince with a hair fetish—guess who?—and beautiful young European actresses in jeopardy. What more could you want?”

(During production of NIGHT OF THE SINNER, Englund’s wife wrote us from Italy, saying, “Robert is torturing young women and hanging them by their hair in a castle in Giove. I am just enjoying the sights.”)

NIGHT OF THE SINNER is produced by longtime Englund friend Loris Curci, who has the Ken Foree zombie film ZONE OF THE DEAD on the way as well (look for more on that one at this site shortly). NIGHT OF THE SINNER co-stars Olga Shuvalova, who appeared in Alex Infascelli’s HATE2O (which Curci also helped produce) and Ilmar Taska’s THY KINGDOM COME. The 35mm film is an Italian-Spanish co-production, shot on a budget of approximately 1.5 million Euros. Alessandro Perrella directed NIGHT OF THE SINNER, which has already played festivals in Italy and Portugal.

“It’s a thriller with elements of SILENCE OF THE LAMBS, as well as PHANTOM OF THE OPERA,” says Curci, who produced NIGHT OF THE SINNER for ABS Production, Tecnofilm and Trees Pictures. “It is quite violent, but the director is toning it down for television sales. Reactions at Cannes [2009] were very good! We shot in amazing locations in the region of Umbria, in central Italy.”

Epic Pictures is currently seeking a U.S. distributor for NIGHT OF THE SINNER. Stay tuned for updates, and stop by tomorrow for the scoop on I WANT TO BE A SOLDIER, Englund’s new film from ROJO SANGRE director Christian Molina.
