Director Dennis Iliadis (pictured), who did a better job than a lot of people probably expected directing last year’s remake of THE LAST HOUSE ON THE LEFT, has settled on his next genre project. He’ll helm PAY THE GHOST for Sidney Kimmel Entertainment, Mark Gordon Productions and Midnight Kitchen Productions.
Variety reports that PAY THE GHOST was scripted by TIMBER FALLS’ Dan Kay based on a short story by Tim Lebbon (originally published in the Cemetery Dance anthology OCTOBER DREAMS), and focuses on a Manhattan couple whose young son is kidnapped on Halloween night. A year later, seemingly haunted by his spectral presence, they set out to find him, which leads them to face an evil spirit on the loose in the city. Kimmel, Gordon, Jordan Wynn and Ian Levy will produce the movie, which is set to roll this summer.
Iliadis has also recently been attached to three remakes (JEKYLL for Universal, THE BIRDS for Platinum Dunes and THE LESSON, a redux of John Mackenzie’s 1971 private-school thriller UNMAN, WITTERING AND ZIGO for DreamWorks/Paramount); CURE, about an experimental medical treatment gone awry, for Groundswell Productions; and a big-screen adaptation of Josh Howard’s comic-book series DEAD@17. Other literary-based genre projects Midnight Kitchen has had cooking in the past year or so are THE JEALOUS ONE, a Hitchcockian suspenser based on the novel by Celia Fremlin; OLD VIRGINIA, from the Cold War-set occult tale by Laird Barron; and an adaptation of China Mieville’s book DETAILS, with MARTYRS’ Pascal Laugier attached to direct and Paramount distributing.
