Filmax, the Spanish company behind the bulk of Spain’s most high-profile fright fare in recent years—most recently Jaume Balagueró and Paco Plaza’s [REC] movies—has now gotten involved with another genre title, a “dark fantasy thriller” titled VERBO.
Variety reports that Filmax has acquired international rights to the film, the feature debut of writer/director Eduardo Chapero-Jackson (pictured left), who has won awards for his short work. The storyline concerns Sara (Alba García), a teenager with psychic abilities who escapes her troubled life by venturing into an dangerous alternate dimension, and the cast also includes Veronica Echegui, Miguel Angel Silvestre, SEXYKILLER star Macarena Gómez and OPEN YOUR EYES’ Najwa Nimri. VERBO is the initial production by Apaches Ent., a company run by Enrique López Lavigne (a writer and producer on 28 WEEKS LATER), Belen Atienza and Jesus de la Vega, which is also backing new movies by WEEKS’ Juan Carlos Fresnadillo and THE ORPHANAGE director Juan Antonio Bayona and scripter Sergio G. Sánchez. Currently in postproduction, VERBO will have early footage screened at this year’s Cannes Film Festival.
