Aspiring special FX makeup artists in the New York area can learn from a pro in the field this summer at a course being offered by New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts. Two sessions are being offered Tuesdays and Thursdays, one running May 17-June 25, the second from June 28-August 6.

Special Effects Make-up for Film & Television is being taught by Rob Benevides, who has done the FX for films including CLEAN, SHAVEN, A GUN FOR JENNIFER, I SHOT ANDY WARHOL and Alex Winter’s FEVER and TV’s STRANGERS WITH CANDY among others, and has been teaching this course for the last 17 years. It is designed for both experienced makeup artists and those just starting out, and covers subjects including: makeup in cinema; anatomical reference; visualizing an effect; safety using materials; sculpting, molding and applying prosthetics; creating silicone molds; the role and responsibility of the makeup artist; graphic violence simulation; skin-safe molding procedures; and out-of-kit FX including bruises, black eyes, blood, scabs, scars, wounds, burns, and decayed flesh. There’s a $357 lab fee that covers that cost of a professional makeup kit specifically designed to contain all the materials necessary to complete in-class projects.
