Vampires, zombies and werewolves have all make major comebacks in the last decade, and now the devil—and the ritual designed to cast him out—is getting his due with the upcoming THE LAST EXORCISM and THE RITE, the latter a New Line project that’s gearing up to shoot and is populating its cast.
Variety reports that Colin O’Donoghue (pictured) is close to signing on to play a key role in the film, with Anthony Hopkins (last seen in THE WOLFMAN) already on board to play a veteran of the exorcism trade. Based on Matt Baglio’s book THE RITE: THE MAKING OF A MODERN EXORCIST, the film is about a seminary student who is accepted into a special program devoted to the devil-purging ritual. At the helm is Mikael Hafstrom, who directed the hit Stephen King flick 1408, working from a script by THE QUEEN OF THE DAMNED and POSSESSION’s Michael Petroni. Beau Flynn and Tripp Vinson, who have experience in this sort of thing from THE EXORCISM OF EMILY ROSE, are producing. O’Donoghue is an award-winning Irish TV actor who recently guested on THE TUDORS.
