Magnolia Pictures has picked up [REC] 2 for distribution. The sequel to writer-directors Jaume Balagueró and Paco Plaza’s 2007 handheld shocker will receive a limited theatrical release in the U.S.

The always snazzy Alex Riviello at CHUD reports that [REC] 2 will hit theaters starting July 9, with a DVD release to follow (via Sony Pictures). The sequel picks up immediately after the original, in which a camera crew becomes trapped inside an apartment building where an infestation problem causes people to become crazed “zombies.” Magnolia also recently nabbed the SXSW-screened chiller MONSTERS (as reported here), with no date currently set.

The first [REC] got the American remake treatment with QUARANTINE, but while there are no plans to make an American sequel yet, Balagueró and Plaza have announced plans for a [REC] 3.
