Various sources are reporting that Dennis Hopper died today of prostate cancer at his home in Venice Beach. The influential actor and director was 74.
Hopper, whose first major screen credit was the classic REBEL WITHOUT A CAUSE and who did time in a couple of Roger Corman movies in the '60s (QUEEN OF BLOOD, THE TRIP), first broke out as director, co-writer and co-star of the 1969 counterculture classic EASY RIDER. His genre credits in the subsequent years included playing "Lefty" Enright in Tobe Hooper's THE TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE 2, the unforgettable villain Frank Booth in David Lynch's BLUE VELVET, "H. Phillip Lovecraft" in Paul Schrader's cable movie WITCH HUNT, John Canyon, one of Stuart Gordon's SPACE TRUCKERS, and the nasty Kaufman in George A. Romero's LAND OF THE DEAD. His unique presence will be missed by film fans of every stripe.
