Hello everyone and thank you for checking out my first FANGORIA'S DREADTIME STORIES monthly blog. Let me start out by introducing myself. My name is Carl Amari and I'm the producer of FANGORIA'S DREADTIME STORIES. When I was 12 years old (in 1975) I was at a friend's house for a sleepover and we were getting rowdy, so my friend's father put on a cassette recording of the classic radio mystery series SUSPENSE to entertain us. The episode was "On A Country Road" and it starred Cary Grant and Cathy Lewis as a young couple stranded on a lonely country road at night because their car had run out of gas. While listening to their car radio they learn that an insane woman, armed with a meat clever, has escaped a nearby mental hospital and has butchered several people. Soon they come face-to-face with a woman who fits the insane person's description as she breaks into their vehicle. Even though it was an audio drama and not TV, I could still see the couple, the car, the lonely road, the crazy woman and all the happenings in the theatre of my mind. IT ABSOLUTELY BLEW ME AWAY. With just voice performances, music and sound effects the images were even more vivid than what I was used to seeing on TV and movie screens. The power of radio drama hit me like a ton of bricks that day and today, some 36 years later, I'm still in awe of what can be accomplished with the medium of audio -- given the right tools.
Radio drama, old and new, has been a big part of my career. I've collected and listened to tens of thousands of classic radio shows in my lifetime and mystery and horror has always been my favorite genres. My favorite old radio mystery/horror shows include: LIGHTS OUT, SUSPENSE, INNER SANCTUM, THE WHISTLER, ESCAPE and THE MYSTERIOUS TRAVELER.
In 2001 I decided to begin producing my own new-time audio series called THE TWILIGHT ZONE RADIO DRAMAS. I grew up watching THE TWILIGHT ZONE and knew that it would translate well to radio so I licensed the rights to turn the classic Rod Serling TV series into a new-time radio drama series. Over the past 10 years I've produced more than 160 episodes with wonderful celebrities in the starring roles, including: Jane Seymour, Lou Gossett Jr, Jason Alexander, Jim Caviezel, Lou Diamond Phillips, Blair Underwood, John Schneider, Adam West, Sean Astin, Michael York, Michael Rooker and Luke Perry. The great Stacy Keach is the host and narrator and it airs each week on nearly 200 radio stations from coast-to-coast. Our official website for the series is www.twilightzoneradio.com
Last year I received a call from Thomas DeFeo, CEO of FANGORIA Magazine, to see if I'd like to produce an audio series for fans of FANGORIA. As a huge fan of radio horror and someone who has been reading FANGORIA Magazine for years, I jumped at the opportunity. We agreed from the start that the series would need to be totally original. It should be cutting edge and feature mystery, horror, sci-fi and dark humor stories by today's top writers. The acting, music, sound effects and sound design would need to be top notch and of course, we'd need the perfect host. We knew that the host had to have just the right blend of edgy commentary and humor. Who better for the hosting chores than Malcolm McDowell?
I do want to caution you though: These FANGORIA'S DREADTIME STORIES are not for the feint of heart. We recommend that listeners under 14 stay away. Although these episodes are meant to amuse and exercise your imagination -- they can be quite scary, shocking and include adult language and adult situations.
The best part of all is that you can hear each month's new episode absolutely FREE by streaming it at the FANGORIA website. Each month a new episode will be available for you to stream for free but at the start of the new month, the previous show will be taken down and never streamed again so be sure to tune in each month and stream it for free. If you miss a show or would like to own it, you can always digitally download the current and past episodes commercial free with extended scenes for $1.99 each to you ipod, iphone, computer or any listening devise. And you can download a free PDF copy of the radio drama scripts (the same scripts used by Malcolm McDowell and the actors) right at the site. And in the coming months, we'll be announcing a contest where your story idea can be turned into a FANGORIA'S DREADTIME STORIES.
From now through the end of October you can hear THE LATE SHIFT by Dennis Etchison. On November 1st, 2011 THE LATE SHIFT will be replaced by REINCARNAL by Max Allan Collins. On December 1st, 2011 REINCARNAL will be replaced by A FUNGUS AMONG US by Steve Nubie and so on. I hope you enjoy these episodes AND the new episodes each and every month.
I'll be back with another blog in the early part of November so thanks for tuning in!!!
