SANTA SANGRE

1989, Mexico/Italy

Poster country of origin: Italy

39.5” x 55”

Director Alejandro Jodorowsky’s SANTA SANGRE (1989) is one of my three favorite horror films ever made, the others being DAWN OF THE DEAD and a rotating title that succumbs to whatever I’m feeling that day. Coincidentally, both of my top two were produced by giallo heavyweight Cladio Argento.

I can probably speak for other North American fans of this metaphysics-steeped horror/fantasy when I say I’m looking forward to finally owning a legitimate copy, thanks to Severin Films, which has announced a January 25, 2011 DVD and Blu-ray release. This Italian duo-fogli (or two-fold) gives a semi-literal depiction of the lead characters Fenix (Axel Jodorowsky, son of Alejandro) and his mother Concha (played by Blanca Guerra).
