I just read the book and couldn't care less about this movie anymore. It's basically a simplistic view of how the world reacted to the Z apocalypse done in a very black and white, actionless and trite way. All the good guy nations do the good guy things and the bad guy nations do the bad guy things. You know what I mean. It even comes with a flowery Bill Pullmanesque Ind Day speech by the american president on the greatness of the nation, yada yada yada. Trite, trite, trite. This book is terrifying for all the wrong reasons. Zombie scare factor = 0

Now taking on the adaptation reins is Matthew Michael Carnahan, a specialist in political thrillers whose credits include STATE OF PLAY and THE KINGDOM. “He’s one of Hollywood’s hot A-list writers, so if they went after him and paid him a mountain of gold, it definitely shows their confidence in this project,” Brooks said on the show. “They say it’s a positive move because they’re very excited, but the truth is, it’s also positive because they just paid him a buttload of money, and [with] the money they paid him, the money they paid Straczynski and they money they’ve paid me, they’ve really dug themselves a deep hole, so they better make this thing!” We’ll keep you posted on any further WORLD WAR Z news we hear.

|2009-09-11 12:36:13 Alex - Matthew Michael Carnahan? Great!
While many people don't understand the political implications in Carnahan's movies, other people are pleasantly surprised by the political openness in his movies. Finally a movie based on conspiracies that the government tries to cover up. Of course his movies are hollywood-ised, but surely not to such an extent that the actual message is not delivered.
His movies are very well organised and full of messages. Lions for Lambs and State of Play very much discuss the conspiracies behind the Iraq and Afghanistan wars. That's why they were both theatrical flops, because such films would preferably not be publicized too much.
On the other hand, many people find politics extremely boring, which would make a movie such as Lions for Lambs appears as too dry and plotless, even when it tells the truth as it exists in the world today.
I look forward to his next movies, but am not quire sure what World War Z is about...I must get the novel first!

Somewhere out there in "Internetland" are a group of idiots with copies of JMS's lauded early draft, who in their collective stupidity poured over details of the thing online until the studio, in THEIR collective stupidity, got scared that too much was given away. I'm certain that's what happened. I'd even be willing to bet that some suit called Straczynski and ordered specific and very dumb changes be made in the story causing JMS to have "The Real Ghostbusters" flashbacks and leave the project. There was a reason he wore all the important hats on "Babylon 5", it's because he didn't want some suit deciding that the bottom line would drive the plot...Matthew Michael Carnahan knows how to sell an agenda through his writing, let HIM create a Budget based thriller out of this work...*sigh*

The Kingdom and Lions for Lambs, the two movies Carnahan has written, weren't good at all. They were both preachy political movies that didn't really do anything. My hopes for this movie have gone straight down the toilet

JMS was fired because his script blew. Just as his rewrite of Ninja Assassin. Just as his script of the Enter the Dragon remake. All awful.
Carnahan is a terrific screenwriter. I wish them luck on the project.

The big question that comes to mind is: Would Brad Pitt's Plan B productions have hired JMS if they didn't feel he was the *right* choice? Not likely. This new screewriter is Forster and Paramount's doing and O' Bannon - you're right - it is Hollywood dumbing down Max Brooks' work for the unwashed masses.

I agree. Dumbed down is most likely correct..
With this new production team nothing would surprise me. Zombie car chases (you know 'zem zombies can drive, doncha)? Spectacular explosions?
(sarcasm)Maybe they'll kill the zombies with an anti-virus like in Independance Day?(/sarcasm)

Bet you 10 to 1 that J. Michael Straczynski's screenplay was a bit too intelligent for the masses. A damn pity.... he's a great screenwriter. This smells of typical Hollywood dumbing down.
I may be wrong, but that's the way these things usually shake down in La-La Land.
