Meanwhile, the two Blu-ray set of the complete theatrical cut of the Weinstein Company’s GRINDHOUSE (which we previously reported on here) has now been shifted to a street date of December 31 by Wal-Mart, which appears to be the only retailer offering it at the moment. That’s the slot the company has also set for a three-DVD GRINDHOUSE edition—but since that’s a Thursday, and discs usually street on Tuesdays, could that just be a default date? (A few years back, the Weinsteins announced a complete KILL BILL DVD set also ultimately dated Dec. 31…and we’re still waiting.) We’ll keep you posted on any further updates.
Halo-8 Entertainment sent along the scoop on the copious special features to be found on its disc of POP SKULL, the bizarre chiller that streets July 28. Directed by Adam Wingard and written by Wingard, E.L. Katz and Lane Hughes, the movie is about an addict (Hughes) struggling with literal and figurative ghosts. The extras include:
- Audio commentary with Wingard and Hughes
- Behind-the-scenes featurette
- Nine deleted/alternate scenes with video intros by Wingard and Hughes
- Five short films by Wingard: PARADOX MARY, DON’T WORRY, LITTLE SISTER GONE, FROM THE PERSPECTIVE OF A DOG and THE SCREAMING MAN
- Jim Ether’s short A MINUTE OF YOUR TIME, which influenced POP SKULL’s visual style
- The Dash Inbetween “Salt Over My Shoulder (Silly Superstition)” music video by Wingard

Producer Sean Fernald let us know that his movie RED VELVET will be available exclusively at Amazon.com August 28 (pre-orders begin July 28) as a DVD, digital download or three-day rental, and gave us the first look at the cover art. Henry Thomas stars as a young man who tells his apartment-building neighbor (Kelli Garner) a scary story—about the murders of her own friends at a cabin in the woods. Directed by Bruce Dickson from a script by Joe Moe (also a co-producer) and Anthony Burns, VELVET features the last of the late Forrest J Ackerman’s 112 screen cameos, and will be presented in anamorphic 1.85:1 widescreen with Dolby Digital 5.1 sound. The disc extras include:
- Audio commentary by Moe
- Behind-the-scenes featurette
- Music video for the closing-credits song “Maniac” by Johnny Mac and the Cadillacs
- Photo slideshow backed by selections from the movie score
- And possibly more. For further info on RED VELVET, check out its official website.
