Martyrs

Martyrs

Plot Summary: France. A night at the beginning of the 1970s. Lucie, a little girl missing for over a year, is discovered wandering by the side of a country road. Near catatonic, she can say nothing about what has happened to her. The cops quickly find the place in which she's been incarcerated - a disused slaughterhouse. Every indication is that she never once left the empty, freezing room in which she was imprisoned. Filthy, starving, dehydrated, the child's body nonetheless bears no traces of sexual abuse - this was no pedophile abduction, but something far stranger. What happened in that icy room? And how did Lucie escape?

And maybe then they will see
That there really is no need...

To make a meal of me.

Re: Martyrs

I've heard quite a bit of hype for this one, but ShockTillYouDrop gave it a very negative review.  In terms of violence, they claimed Hostel was worse.

Really? The second half is pretty brutal, and the ending is brilliant.

Re: Martyrs

I agree with beyond.

The first half is good and the second half is 'torture porn' pretending to be 'about something'. Funny how people bitch about American torture movies, then a film thats subtitled comes out and people gush about its intense genius. It's pompous and lazy at the end.

In a blaze of blood, bones, and body parts, the vivacious young girl was instantly reduced to a tossed human salad... a salad that police are still trying to gather up... a salad that was once named Elizabeth.

"Torture porn" is a pompous and lazy way of dismissing a movie while pretending to say something.

Re: Martyrs

I put the term in quotations for a reason. It's now a general term used to describe a certain type of film, of which Martyrs is definatly one of. Deal with it. There's nothing pompous about it.

I read your article. There's alot of words but you didn't actually say anything.

I wouldn't get too worried about a general term. YOU generalise and dare I say judge movie fans opinions all the time - usually based on your apparent need to feel intellectually superior while conveniantly ignoring the fact that one persons opinion is based on their OWN experience of watching a SINGLE movie, and not some not some group internet fanboy ignorance or nostalgia.

But, whatever floats your boat.

BTW - the quote from Stephen King at the end. I love Stephen King, but he blew that sentence out of his ass. And you just wafted it around...

What certain type of film is a "torture porn" film?

The Saw films are about a man (aided by his henchmen) whose dying wish was to put people that he believed needed to be taught a lesson in violently elaborate traps.

The Hostel films are about an organization where rich people pay a fee for the privilege of killing another human being.

Martyrs is about an organization that's trying to create a martyr in order to learn some transcendent truth. When they finally succeed, the truth is so horrible that the leader takes her own life.

Obviously it's the term "torture porn" that doesn't say anything.

Re: Martyrs

I thought this movie was great. It has so many intense moments. And no matter what other people say I don't think this is a torture porn at all. I like hostel too and don't see it as a torture porn. I think it all does mean something. It has a great moral to it. It's not a movie I am going to pop in whenever I want to watch something. But I would still watch it like once every year or so. It's worth seeing.

Don't try to run. I've got six little friends. And they can all run faster then you can.

So you rather the movie be about nothing except for kick-ass violence & horror which is pretty damn lazy to me.

I don't bitch about American torture movies. HOSTEL 1 & 2 and SAW 3 - 6 just fucking sucked ass and that's a fact. MARTYRS is an awesome movie and it has nothing to do with the spoken language or subtitles. I don't praise the GUINEA PIG movies simply because they are Japanese & subtitled. In fact they suck more than HOSTEL  1 & 2 and SAW 3 - 6. I'm one of the few people that thought HIGH TENSION was ruined by the impossible & stupid plot twist.

When I first got a screener of MARTYRS I watched it on my computer at work and then I went home & watched it again on my TV. It was just as intense the second time around.

100% what i thought about the second half.
Thats why i didn't like it, it seemed to just drastically drop fast.
it reminded me of a ripoff of Hostel the second half, and i just lost attention and didn't care any more.
first half still kicks ass.
