Ok horror fans (brother sisters?) help me out on this one.

Before I go any further I will say this. I am 40 which means I'm fuckin old.

So if you don't get the gist of this or turn into a hater just remember I'm fuckin 40 and am probably near death.

I love rock and metal. I was probably into it before most of you were. My uncles were both Vietnam vets who moved into my parents place in the mid 70s (when I was about 6) and turned the garage into a biker hellhole/crashpad (i.e. most of your places). Alcohol, drugs, sex, craziness went on in this place and I witnessed a lot at a young age. I also got exposed to a lot of good music; country and western, gospel, pop, METAL, and even early punk.

Tons of people here and at other forums are into two things. Dimebag Darrell and black/death metal.

I listened to Pantera and never much liked them. They just sounded like a 90's version of Exodus or Metallica. The whole band seemed like tons of attituide with no substance. Dimebag didn't impress me either. Compared to Randy Rhodes he is a bitch. I think Jake E Lee is better as well. Yet people all around me went nuts for these guys and proclaim Dimebag to be the best guitarist ever.

I also dont get the whole black metal/death metal craze. I was around when Motorhead and Venom were fairly new. You'd think I'd be jizzing all over myself about the bands.

What am I missing? I kind of like Hammerfall only because I can understand them. The rest just sound like warmed over Iron Maiden played at 2x the speed.

Help me get into these bands. Splain what Im missin please! Give me some cd's to listen to that might change my mind.

Well, then prove it.

I have been through everything metal has to offer and for the  most part this sounds like a bunch of fanboys puffing up and little girls crying cause the Foo Fighters are taking a break.

I'm going to second the vote for DANZIG.
He's not so over-the-top Metal that you'll get turned off,
but Metal enough to make you feel pumped
when you're listening to his stuff. If you grew up
listening to Biker Rock, then you're gonna like DANZIG.

Check out some of his tunes here: http://www.myspace.com/danzig

darkstar first I'll say, cool that you're open to at least giving the stuff a chance or getting an idea of what it's about. I'm not very far from you in age (39). I wasn't raised with many hard livin types in the 70's. I have an older sister and kind of got weaned on 70's pop AM radio (Everything from Carly Simon, to Wings to Michael Jackson & Village People etc.). At age 8 I started rebelling from the radio stuff. I got into KISS, and Nugent, Van Halen, AC/DC & Cheap Trick. That started my ascent/descent into harder types of music. And as time went on gradually I kept going more & more intense & extreme. By the 90's I had been into thrash & punk for 5 years and by then was into full on Death Metal bands like Carcass, Napalm Death, Entombed and Cannibal Corpse. By 98 I could include Black Metal to that list. But it was something I definitely got into gradually. Also I totally agree with you about Pantera & Randy Rhoads (My alltime fav guitarist).

So to answer what are you missing, tell us what about it don't you get.

Hammerfall have nothing in common with Black & Death metal really. Other then that it's Metal.

As for recommendations - I'm not sure what you're into other then Tool. I do know a lot of Tool fans that really like Opeth. They have all the elements of Black & Death Metal, along with a lot more progressive influences. My personal Favz are My Arms your Hearse, Still Life, Blackwater Park & Watershed.

I can give you more suggestions. But what do you like already? There's so many different varieties of this stuff.

Re: Ok horror fans (brother sisters?) help me out on this one.

Danzig is a great choice but if you pick up the wrong album you might think we pointed you in the wrong direction. Here are some break downs for the main albums. 1-4 come highly reccomended by most metal fans.

Danzig I (S/T)- Moody dark bluesy hard rock
Danzig II Lucifuge- Moody blues metal with a couple of acoustic songs (my second favorite)
Danzig III- How the Gods Kill- Heavy dramatic goth metal
Danzig 4p- hard metal with some slight industrial twinges (my favorite by far)
Danzig- 5: Blackacidevil very industrial and unlike any of the other albums
Danzig 6:66 Satans Child- Industrial metal, really creepy tones
Danzig 7:77 electronics are gone and are back to a stripped down heavy death rock
Danzig Circle of Snakes more in the vein of Nu-Metal

Re: Ok horror fans (brother sisters?) help me out on this one.

Why worry about it dude unsure

I despise black/death metal and think it's a bunch of talentless screaming and growling. If you don't like it, then you don't like it. Why force yourself to get into it?
