You should read LORDS OF CHAOS: THE BLOODY RISE OF THE SATANIC METAL UNDERGROUND by Michael Moynihan & Didrik Søderlind.

Re: Ok horror fans (brother sisters?) help me out on this one.

Why worry about it dude unsure

I despise black/death metal and think it's a bunch of talentless screaming and growling. If you don't like it, then you don't like it. Why force yourself to get into it?

I like some black/death metal, definately like the more symphonic and melodic stuff. Moonspell, Emperor, and Dimmu Borgir are some reccomendations for that kind of stuff.

For more melodic epic stuff you more traditional vocals you may want to look into stuff like Blind Guardian and Iced Earth

I've always loved Carcass. I don't know why they stand out for me, but they do.

However, I've always HATED the gutteral growl stuff (Napalm Death, etc.)
I'll give any band a chance at least once if they don't sound like a demonic version of Cookie Monster laugh

Re: Ok horror fans (brother sisters?) help me out on this one.

Danzig is a great choice but if you pick up the wrong album you might think we pointed you in the wrong direction. Here are some break downs for the main albums. 1-4 come highly reccomended by most metal fans.

Danzig I (S/T)- Moody dark bluesy hard rock
Danzig II Lucifuge- Moody blues metal with a couple of acoustic songs (my second favorite)
Danzig III- How the Gods Kill- Heavy dramatic goth metal
Danzig 4p- hard metal with some slight industrial twinges (my favorite by far)
Danzig- 5: Blackacidevil very industrial and unlike any of the other albums
Danzig 6:66 Satans Child- Industrial metal, really creepy tones
Danzig 7:77 electronics are gone and are back to a stripped down heavy death rock
Danzig Circle of Snakes more in the vein of Nu-Metal

I actually have all of those and a few more. Danzig 4 is my favorite, even though I love the The Lost Tracks dual cd set he released as well.

I'm kind of where your at but I don't want to shrug this music off. If it was just couple of drunken losers who were into this I could say it's shit. But I have close friends who are pretty bright, and have fairly good taste in music who are into these type of bands and all the various subgenres. It's easy to shrug off other forms of music - neo country, rap and hip hop, pop, cause most of the people I know who love it are morons.

I'm still checking some of these bands out. A friend of mine is a Mortician fan (I'm already in love with their cd covers) and is going to loan me his collection.

Re: Ok horror fans (brother sisters?) help me out on this one.

#4 really gave me a whole new appreciation for Danzig. I never much liked anything after the 1st album. It all seemed like replayed AC/DC riffs, and just not enough substance to make the band stand out. When I heard Can'tspeak I was blown away how simple & still interesting & hooky that song is. I bought the CD and was thoroughly satisfied start to finish, even more then #1.

& zmbdog Carcass are one of the best. & might be back for a good while too.

I have friends who are turned off by Danzigs first couple of CDs, but love Danzig 4 when I have them listen to it. Its one of the most underrated Cd's of the 90's that deserved much better response than it received.

4p may be underrated but it is however one of the most stolen cds of all time! Seriously.

I have a pretty huge Danzig and related collection. I didn't include the EPs and the lost tracks in my list because I believe the full albums are better and some of the later lost tracks stuff might lose newer fans, particularly the remixes.

Most of my friends biggest complaints about early Danzig work is that it seems to macho and overly dramatic.

Re: Ok horror fans (brother sisters?) help me out on this one.

try some of the so-called "new wave of american heavy metal" bands. Some of my favorites are Killswitch Engage, Lamb of God (in my opinion the finest active american metal band), Trivium, and Atreyu

this shit is so played out

Dont bother with American bands (at least new ones) Europe is where it's at!

These bands are neither Black, nor Death Metal.

darkstar, if you do nothing else, please remember  I DIDN'T RECOMMEND ANY OF THESE BANDS.

No Carcass only broke up once in 95 or so. All but one of them went on to a band called Blackstar (Which later changed to Blackstar Rising). Then Ken their drummer suffered a brain hemorrhage & was comatose for 6 or 9 months and they broke up. He's alive and well. Although the coma affected his ability to play. The band reformed with a new drummer in 08 and did a whole slew of festivals & a short tour of the States. Ken was along as well & made an appearance onstage and took a bow with the guys.

Their myspace just sent out a bulletin to expect a big announcement involving a new album in the next few weeks.
