What am I missing? I kind of like Hammerfall only because I can understand them. The rest just sound like warmed over Iron Maiden played at 2x the speed.
Help me get into these bands. Splain what Im missin please! Give me some cd's to listen to that might change my mind.
darkstar first I'll say, cool that you're open to at least giving the stuff a chance or getting an idea of what it's about. I'm not very far from you in age (39). I wasn't raised with many hard livin types in the 70's. I have an older sister and kind of got weaned on 70's pop AM radio (Everything from Carly Simon, to Wings to Michael Jackson & Village People etc.). At age 8 I started rebelling from the radio stuff. I got into KISS, and Nugent, Van Halen, AC/DC & Cheap Trick. That started my ascent/descent into harder types of music. And as time went on gradually I kept going more & more intense & extreme. By the 90's I had been into thrash & punk for 5 years and by then was into full on Death Metal bands like Carcass, Napalm Death, Entombed and Cannibal Corpse. By 98 I could include Black Metal to that list. But it was something I definitely got into gradually. Also I totally agree with you about Pantera & Randy Rhoads (My alltime fav guitarist).
So to answer what are you missing, tell us what about it don't you get.
Hammerfall have nothing in common with Black & Death metal really. Other then that it's Metal.
As for recommendations - I'm not sure what you're into other then Tool. I do know a lot of Tool fans that really like Opeth. They have all the elements of Black & Death Metal, along with a lot more progressive influences. My personal Favz are My Arms your Hearse, Still Life, Blackwater Park & Watershed.
I can give you more suggestions. But what do you like already? There's so many different varieties of this stuff.
