Drag Me to Hell

2009 will mark the year Sam Raimi returns to his horror roots with his supernatural horror flick, "Drag Me to Hell". We haven't seen Raimi unleash his horror side since Spider-Man 2's brief, but awesome Doc Ock escape from the hospital scene (did anybody else catch John Landis' cameo as an ill-fated doctor). I'm extremely excited to see Raimi behind the helm of a lower budget film after spending so much time and energy on the Spider-Man films. There's no doubt that "Drag Me" will be compared to his Evil Dead films, and while we cannot yet decide if "Drag Me" has lived up to Raimi's past work in the horror genre, I say that it doesn't matter. I'm just excited to see a master come back to his craft and have another go. Bring on the Fake Shemps and hags!

I'm there, but I've never been a big Raimi guy. I'll see it just to see it..

It'll be interesting to see what it's like. The Evil Dead is my favorite film of all time, but I don't think Raimi has it in him anymore. He only made Evil Dead 1&2 to break into the film industry.

I'm certain he has it deep within him. I doubt he's lost his ability to direct horror and abuse his leading actors.

sure he has the ability. But does he still have the passion or the love for the genre. Or is it just a business decision?

He must still have love for the genre because he could have done any other type of movie after the Spider-Man films and he chose to do this.

Have to agree. But Raimi is a film fan of all genres it seems. His favorite film is The Treasure of the Sierra Madre (which is a great film--see it) and he loves the Three Stooges. No matter what, Raimi is going to do what he feels is best for whatever film project he works on. But I'm sure he won't be making this film into a gorefest. Chances are it'll be a PG-13 horror flick. Which I have no problem with.

Is Bruce Campbell starring in it? Because I think that when those two work together, they make "movie magic!"(insert "Jazz hands")

The afterlife will await you."

First Impressions: http://www.shocktillyoudrop.com/news/topnews.php?id=9362

Test screenings occur often in Los Angeles. And normally I write them off for a number of reasons, notably, because the film is usually not finished. Also, they're a pain in the ass to attend (and often a drive asking you to get to the theater early and endure traffic). I do go sometimes, though. I shut off the "work" mode and partake in the screening as a curious horror fan. Yet when a persistent man on the street hands you an invite and that invite is to the latest Sam Raimi horror film you do not ignore it. So, last night, this writer - a rabid Evil Dead nut - slinked on over to Burbank where the director's latest Drag Me to Hell played to an audience for the first time.

As the film is still wrapping post-production, I'm not offering a full review here, but I will set down some extremely positive thoughts. But before I do, a quick note: This was the first screening I attended where they did not enforce some non-disclosure agreement. Peculiar and tempting bait for myself and the other salivating journos I saw in the crowd eager to dish their thoughts on Raimi's post-Spider-Man foray into the genre that kicked off his career. I'm cognizant full reviews are out there for Hell at the time of this writing; I'd like to reserve a proper critique until I've seen the finished product. Still, if you're like me, you'd probably like to know what the buzz is like on the film.

For the most part, it's unanimous: When it comes to horror, this film proves Raimi has not lost his touch.

Not by a fraction. Drag Me to Hell is an achievement in the fact that it's PG-13 and scary (the film made me jump several times) and, better still, an original story. Not a remake. Not a sequel. Simply a balls-to-the-wall tale about a young woman whose life is shattered by a curse placed upon her by a vengeful gypsy. It pushes the boundaries of its rating with some first-rate fright gags, it features a taught, smart script and there are amiable characters to invest in. Alison Lohman's Christine is a character you feel for. That you root for, more importantly.

This is Raimi going old school in more ways than one with scenes that hark back to some of our '70s faves as well as his beloved Evil Dead series (the séance sequence here is out of control). Shocking, fun, evil but counterbalanced with choice Raimi humor, Drag Me to Hell is an absolutely terrific studio horror picture. And I loved the temp score which called upon, I believe, The Bird With the Crystal Plummage and even a few vintage Universal monster movie music cues (Chris Young is in line to do the actual soundtrack).

I walked away from last year's Comic-Con presentation with mixed thoughts. A teaser emphasized humor over scares. But this isn't a comedy. Make no qualms about it: This is a horror film first, and a damn good one at that. It doesn't need to be rated R and there's not feeling that the story is being forced into a PG-13 box. Drag Me to Hell is the perfect reflection of an ambitious director who departs the genre to fine-tune his craft and try on other stories. He then returns to horror with a matured eye, applying the things he has learned and demonstrating that the fresh edge that put him on the map in the first place has not been lost.

Raimi sat in the crowd with us. Amongst many fans wearing a myriad of horrors shirts (from Army of Darkness to Maniac). He was in good company and they rewarded him with screams, laughter and applause. Afterwards, I met up with him in the lobby with a few colleagues and he seemed delighted to hear we gave the film a thumbs up. His reaction, in fact, could have been construed as relief.

No worries, Sam, you done great.

As for you, dear readers, be excited. May 29th cannot get here soon enough.

Re: Drag Me to Hell

i for one am extremely excited about this

I dont think sams lost his touch - infact, I see some film work in the spider man flicks (believe it or not!) that still remind me of old Evil Dead shots.

I'm pumped as hell for this one!

Drag Me To Hell Review

19.02.09 # 3:02 # Review # No Comment

An early Drag Me To Hell review, courtesy of trusted source ‘Tobey Maguire’.

Got into a secret pre-screening of Sam Raimi’s “Drag Me to Hell” movie and damn. SO good.

First, when they said “a work in progress” they weren’t kidding. The footage was weirdly digitized and mostly blurry. Don’t know what caused that, it looked like YouTube quality.

But it didn’t matter. Even the unfinished VFX didn’t matter. This movie was so good it had the entire audience in the palm of its gnarled, witchy hand.

If you like Evil Dead you’ll like this. Sure, it’s PG-13 (or so they claim), so it’s not gory and there’s no bad language. But dude in the first ten minutes a little boy gets dragged to hell! It’s SO messed up!

The story is simple: a bank teller refuses a loan to an old lady who turns out to be a witch. Chaos ensues.

And I mean chaos. We’re talking gypsy curses, ghosts, and goat demons. From the first attack to the end of the movie, it seems like every ten seconds something’s getting broken or something is getting killed. It’s REALLY tense from start to finish. I went in expecting a straight comedy like the final Evil Dead flick and was REALLY surprised how scary and intense the movie was.

But the movie does have its funny moments, like the kitty murder scene and the talking goat scene and the countless times the witch vomits some weird substance all over the hot chick.

Overall, I was surprised how clever the script was and how good the acting was. In particular, Justin Long is great. I mean, he’s relaxed and funny most of the time and then comes this INTENSE part at the end that I won’t spoil, but his performance is heart wrenching.

This movie twists and turns all the time. The plot is very simple, but it does a lot of things you don’t expect or normally see in movies. It’s so refreshing to see something so original.

This is a return to form for Raimi, who really blew it with Spider-Man 3. I hope he makes more movies like this in the future.
