Argento is my favorite followed by Fulci. I like a lot of those on Psycho-C's list (great list by the way). My faves:

"Deep Red"
"Opera"
"Tenebrae"
"New York Ripper"
"Phenomena"
"Don't Torture A Duckling"

Solid list. I just finished watching DEATH WALKS AT MIDNIGHT and THE FIFTH CORD and they were both really
great. Lenzi's EYEBALL is fun and better than his SEVEN BLOODSTAINED ORCHIDS.

Luckily NoShame, Blue Underground, and others are making these easier to come by.

"Death Walks At Midnight" and "The Fifth Chord?" I'll have to check those out. One I still haven't seen, which I've heard nothing but good things about is "Torso?" Seen it? If so, is it as good as advertised?

Also I know Giallos are an Italian thing, but I can't help to bring up the only film I can think of as an American Giallo: "Alice, Sweet Alice." Which is a really good film and also one of my faves. You've had to have seen it, right? If so, what'd you think?

I loved TORSO too - but Cannibal's right, it may take some warming to.. I was that way with Gialli in general - it took
me a while to really embrace them.

American Gialli? Forget about it! DRESSED TO KILL, SISTERS, BASIC INSTINCT, etc., etc. There's lots.

Btw, it's THE FIFTH CORD, not CHORD..  A good, dark giallo - more serious than most. Great music too.

Torso is definitely great. if you aren't feeling it the first time i'm sure you'll warm up to it slowly and one or two more times you'll be there.

a few of my favorite are The Killer Must Kill Again, The Bird With The Crystal Plumage, and What Have You Done To Solange?...those are the ones i took to most upon first viewing so they are the best to me. just because some have to grow on you don't mean they are bad. i appreciate those in a whole different way.

I'm ready to rewatch some Fenech/Hilton tagteam efforts!

Oh man - Edwige is soooooo fine.. I'd die if she showed up at a Fango convention.

Good call on KILLER MUST KILL -- that is such an awesome thriller! Great story and twists.. Too bad Cozzi never
made another good film(!) Well, CONTAMINATION is okay.

Favourites outside Argento etc...

The Red Queen Kills Seven Times - A host of Euro Babes and a neat premise makes it great escapist material.
Torso - So mean-spirited and the last suspenseful 20 minutes or so are top draw.
The Killer Must Kill again - Antoine Saint-John has the perfect face for a killer!
Perfume of the Lady in Black - A Beautiful, dream like and ultimately sombre little film.
The Strange Vice of Mrs Wardh - The Lovely Edwige Fenech coupled with a haunting Nora Orlandi score, make some scenes absolutely mesmerizing.


Still loads more I need to see, but I went through a period of watching nothing but gialli, so I've been taking a break from them for a bit.

Sergio Martino is the master of the giallo. His best, and, in my opinion, THE best giallo of them all is 'The Strange Vice of Mrs. Wardh.' As Beyond said, the score is haunting and beautiful, and the movie was truly an innovator to the gialli sub-genre. The combination of gratuitous sex and violence had never been done before Martino's first effort.

Argento's 'Deep Red' and 'Tenebre' are my next two favorite gialli.

PERFUME is one I ordered and should have soon..
PERVERSION STORY is one I have in my Netflix queue..haven't seen yet.
THE EVIL EYE aka THE GIRL WHO KNEW TOO MUCH is the grandaddy of all Gialli. Mario Bava made it BEFORE
   BLOOD AND BLACK LACE making it the first true giallo. Great, suspenseful stuff if you ask me. It's in one of
   my Bava boxed sets. I lucked out this week and won the original 11"x14" lobby card set on eBay - for a
   surprisingly low price..!
KILLERS/GUESTS is one I can't find.
DEATH SMILED AT MURDER is another I can't find (let me know if you do - please)
SLEEPLESS is Argento's comeback giallo from a few years back. Good stuff, and it feels fresh..
DEVIL/FACES is available from my source but I haven't gotten it yet.
SISTERS OF URSULA is a later giallo, and pretty bad. It's got lots of sex but not much else. Boring and not
very suspenseful.

Can.- when I get the bunch I've sent for I'll post info. about them and recommend the cool ones.. I've got a few
coming that are supposed to rock. Rare ones too.

Funny, I thought I was the only one that liked "Sleepless." While it's not "Deep Red" or "Opera" I still enjoyed it.

Yeah, those Bava cards look amazing (the film is b&w, but the set is blazing color). Really, really lucked out there
(I stumbled across the set about an hour before the auction ended(!))

..and those Bava dvd sets are another story! I found both of them on eBay, new & sealed, for $17 each(!!) That's
like a dozen uncut Bava films for under $40!

SLEEPLESS is pretty good if you ask me. I'll watch anything w/ Max Von Sydow, so seeing him work w/ Argento
was a bonus. Cool score in that one too.

Like I said, let me know what gialli you pick up and I'll do the same for u. I've checked out XPloited and found
that most of the ones I wanted were PAL format (I don't have a multi-region player).

yeah, those Bava sets are 25 each on amazon and that's a hell of deal but the deal you got is insane!

and love it -- really good. The other one on him is WORLD OF HORROR (which is great too). I found PSYCHIC

i'm not really either. there was just a dvd i bought and couldn't watch it for a while cause i didn't have one. i started looking into buying an all region player but then i came across this site...and boom a free all region player.
actually my player before i switched it to all region used to play all region PAL and Reg. 2 PAL dvds but it was selective about titles.

yeah i'll definitely let you know what i think of those. no i have never seen Don't Look Now. i have this book from a few years ago and the scene they pictured in it just looks odd so i have been wanting that for quite a while. glad it's on its way
