Re: Giallo Madness

Argento is my favorite followed by Fulci. I like a lot of those on Psycho-C's list (great list by the way). My faves:

"Deep Red"
"Opera"
"Tenebrae"
"New York Ripper"
"Phenomena"
"Don't Torture A Duckling"

Solid list. I just finished watching DEATH WALKS AT MIDNIGHT and THE FIFTH CORD and they were both really
great. Lenzi's EYEBALL is fun and better than his SEVEN BLOODSTAINED ORCHIDS.

Luckily NoShame, Blue Underground, and others are making these easier to come by.

"Death Walks At Midnight" and "The Fifth Chord?" I'll have to check those out. One I still haven't seen, which I've heard nothing but good things about is "Torso?" Seen it? If so, is it as good as advertised?

Also I know Giallos are an Italian thing, but I can't help to bring up the only film I can think of as an American Giallo: "Alice, Sweet Alice." Which is a really good film and also one of my faves. You've had to have seen it, right? If so, what'd you think?

I loved TORSO too - but Cannibal's right, it may take some warming to.. I was that way with Gialli in general - it took
me a while to really embrace them.

American Gialli? Forget about it! DRESSED TO KILL, SISTERS, BASIC INSTINCT, etc., etc. There's lots.

Btw, it's THE FIFTH CORD, not CHORD..  A good, dark giallo - more serious than most. Great music too.

I completely blanked out and forgot about "Dressed To Kill" and "Sisters." Good call.

You forgot about them because there's no such thing as American Giallo.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Giallo

DePalma's work especially doesn't qualify for the genre.

I couldn't care any less what wikipedia says. That crap website is so full of errors it's not even funny. And we already know that technically because they weren't made by Italians they're not Giallos, but "Alice, Sweet Alice" is as close to an American Giallo-style slasher there is.

Re: Giallo Madness

Man I haven't watched a good Giallo in such a long time it's ridiculous. I am a big fan of this Italian based genre, mainly due to the atmosphere and colors(Argento and Bava especially). For a while I was buying Giallo films like crazy but have kinda backed off lately so I don't get burned out on them. I've always wondered what genre of American films comes closest to actual Giallo as there is no such thing as American Giallo no matter what any website says.

What would a woman that fine want in a big, fat, nasty, greasy, fat, stank, bloated, cheesy-backed, 12-sandwich-eatin' bastard?

Turn around mister, and never trust a girl giving her donuts away for free.

Yeah, I'm trying to space them out too(!) Don't want them to all run together.

For me, gialli are a kind of blend of film noir/mystery and slasher films -- made with overbaked, psychedelic
stylistics. If Agatha Christie wrote the screenplay for FRIDAY THE 13TH(!), it might look something like a giallo.

I think DePalma's DRESSED TO KILL strongly resembles a giallo -- in style and substance. His SISTERS too.
BASIC INSTINCT recalls both classic noir and the giallo to a degree. If it was just a matter of hunting a
killer it would be a plain old crime thriller/mystery, but Douglas is sleeping with the main suspect -- whom he
is confident is guilty(!) That's pretty twisted, and more noir than anything else. Ever see COLOR OF NIGHT
from the 90s? It's pretty bad, but very gialli-esqe in my opinion.

Haven't seen them yet, but if you do let me know..

probably going to buy them both soon. along with the other ones i can't remember anymore Grin i'll find them though.

eh i'm going down with the ship. if i get sick of them they will always come back around. been so long since i have been on such a huge kick with them, and enjoyed them so much. i found if you watch ones you have seen in between it helps to differentiate them. so that's what i'm doing

Re: Giallo Madness

I'm on the same kick, man. This is like the third time I've given myself a crash-course in Gialli,
and for some unknown reason it's really clicked. I'm obsessed! I'm renting from Netflix, buying
off eBay, buying all the books I can, buying the soundtracks I love (Bruno Nicolai's CASE OF THE
BLOODY IRIS is great, as is Morricone's AUTOPSY score), etc., etc.

I'm more extreme when it comes to spacing them out -- I have to watch like ANCHORMAN or
LOST IN TRANSLATION or something inbetween films(!) Really cleanses the palate.

Some recent buys of mine that I didn't notice in any of the lists in this thread:

Death Carries a Cane (not my favorite giallo, but a nice middleof-the-road effort)
The Cold-Blooded Beast (Klaus Kinski!!)
Black Belly of the Tarantula

Wald.,

CANE is one I've ordered and haven't received yet; BEAST is another name for SLAUGHTER HOTEL (which rocks);
and BLACK BELLY is another big name in the genre that I've seen but don't own. Really good.

Interested to hear your review of BEAST..
